2012 Illinois World Water Day
On March 22, the United Nations will mark
International World Water Day, a day to celebrate freshwater and
recognize its impact in our lives. Each year, the UN focuses on a
different water theme, and this year we will be exploring the
significance of water and food security.
According to the UN World Water Day site, “International World Water Day
is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the
importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management
of freshwater resources.”
In the Governor’s Office we recognize the critical importance of water
and food security initiatives in Illinois. In a 2005 report to the Paul
Simon Public Policy Institute, Professor Christopher Lant writes,
“Illinois...face[s] substantial water resources problems...stem[ming]
primarily from the complex interplay between agriculture and water
quantity and quality” (Lant, 2005, 2).
As responsible stewards of our environment we must ensure that we
deliver a green, clean Land of Lincoln to future generations. With this
charge motivating our efforts, we are pleased to announce a
three-pronged “Illinois-edition” of UN World Water Day. Each of these
three synchronized events targets a different constituency that will
sustain our water and food security initiatives across the state.
