The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, Illinois is the repository for photographs of more than 8,000 Illinois soldiers who served in the Civil War. All of these images have been scanned and are in the process of being cataloged and added to CONTENTdm
. Up to this point, photographs of soldiers from the 4th Illinois Cavalry and the 7th, 9th, 17th, 33rd, 37th, 56th, 64th, 77th, 86th and 108th Illinois Infantry Regiments have been added. Click here to view the collection
In addition to the names, regiments and companies in which soldiers served, other relevant information is included when it has been verified: where the soldiers were from originally; their residence at enlistment; the dates and the studios where the photographs were taken; and whether the photographs are tintypes, cartes-de-visite, or cabinet cards.
As they are completed, additional images from Illinois artillery, cavalry and infantry units will be added to this database. If the soldier or regiment being researched is not found here now, please check back periodically.
