More Than 900,000 Families Received $160 Million in Tax Relief in 2013

CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today encouraged working families across Illinois to apply for Illinois’ Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The Governor fought for and signed legislation in 2012 that doubled the value of Illinois’ EITC. In 2013 the credit helped more than 900,000 families receive $160 million in tax relief. The announcement is part of the Governor’s agenda to drive economic growth and support working families across Illinois.

CHICAGO – February 16, 2013. Governor Pat Quinn today encouraged working families across Illinois to learn about how they can apply for newly-expanded tax relief and highlighted no-cost tax preparation services they should take advantage of. The governor continued his drive to get the word out about Illinois’ newly expanded Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) at Truman College, which serves as a tax assistance center organized by the Center for Economic Progress (CEP).

CHICAGO – January 25, 2013. Governor Pat Quinn today was joined by numerous community organizations to celebrate the one-year anniversary of his successful push for major tax relief for working families across Illinois. Governor Quinn fought for and signed legislation in 2012 that doubles the state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) over the next two years, which is expected to save working families an extra $105 million a year. The same legislation also benefits all taxpayers by improving the value of the personal exemption by indexing it to inflation. Today’s event is part of the governor’s effort to drive economic growth and support working families across Illinois.

Tax Preparation Assistance Program Helps Working Families File on Time

CHICAGO - April 10, 2012. One week away from the April 17 tax filing deadline, Governor Pat Quinn today urged working families to learn about tax relief available to them in Illinois and get the assistance they need to file their taxes. The governor continued his drive to get the word out about Illinois’ EITC at Harold Washington College, which serves as a tax assistance center organized by the Center for Economic Progress (CEP). CEP President and CEO David Marzahl joined the governor and representatives from Walmart, who also announced a major donation to CEP to provide free financial services to working families.

The law doubles the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) over two years, saving low-income workers an extra $105 million per year. The new law also benefits all Illinois taxpayers by raising the value of the personal exemption and indexing it to inflation.

Throughout the fall veto session, Governor Quinn insisted that tax relief for working families be part of the package.

Illinois Working Families Get Extra Tax Help

With three weeks left, working families can still get free tax preparation and EITC eligibility assistance

CHICAGO – March 24, 2009. State and non-profit tax assistance providers are urging working families struggling to make ends meet to seek free tax assistance to maximize their refunds from last year's tax payments. There is also hope that many Illinois families could see smaller tax bills and bigger paychecks as soon as July 1, 2009, if the tax reform plan proposed last week by Governor Pat Quinn becomes law. By increasing the personal exemption, a family of four earning almost $61,000 would pay lower taxes in 2010.
