As part of the effort to improve the well-being of residents of Illinois, Governor Quinn announced in January 2012 the creation of the Governor's Council on Health and Physical Fitness to develop practical ideas to help residents embrace healthier lifestyles.

The Governor’s Council on Health and Physical Fitness is charged with promoting a statewide response to prevent chronic disease brought on by poor nutrition and a lack of physical fitness.

Established to improve the health of Illinios residents and increase physical activity among all Illinoians, the Council’s goal is to promote lifelong physical activity and healthy eating practices. These practices have been shown to contribute to healthy weight, prevent or improve most chronic diseases and increase longevity.

In short, the mission of the Council is to encourage Illinois citizens to participate more actively in health and fitness activities that will help them live a healthier, happier and more productive life.
