Governor's Office of New Americans

As part of Governor Pat Quinn’s efforts to make Illinois the nation’s “most-welcoming state”, the Governor’s Office of New Americans was created to provide services, build partnerships and spearhead legislation to improve the integration of Illinois’ two million immigrants.

The Office of New Americans provides a wide range of services, such as health screening, job training, legal aid, and help in finding college aid or a mortgage. Newcomers may visit one of six Welcoming Centers (see below for locations), go online or stop by the Welcoming Centers “Mobile Unit”.

Last year, at least 11,000 new Americans utilized the services and programs offered by the Illinois Welcoming Centers. The number of State agency service providers grew from 11 to 25. Details about the many programs are available in multiple languages.

The Office of New Americans also spearheads policy reforms and legislation. In January, 2013, Governor Quinn signed legislation to help ensure every Illinois motorist is properly licensed to drive. For years, civil rights activists have fought for the ability of undocumented immigrants to get Illinois driver’s licenses. To view a video of the historic bill-signing, click here.

Another initiative is the DREAM Fund which provides scholarships to college students who are the children of immigrants. To learn more about the DREAM Fund, click here.
