More Than $6 Million in State and Local Partnership Investments to Help Create the Largest Open Space Project in the Country

CHICAGO – March 1, 2013. Governor Pat Quinn today took another major step towards revitalizing Chicago’s Calumet region by announcing $6.8 million in state and local investments to continue developing the Millennium Reserve, a 140,000-acre project to create the largest open space area in the country. The governor also signed an Executive Order creating a steering committee made up of federal, state and local partners that will oversee the vision for the reserve. Making the Millennium Reserve a reality is part of the governor’s ongoing commitment to protecting Illinois’ natural resources, creating jobs and strengthening communities.

CHICAGO, IL – August 16, 2012. U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin joined state and local officials and organizations in Chicago to announce 12 new Millennium Reserve conservation projects that will further the mission of transforming the Calumet Region of Chicago into a one-of-a-kind public destination that protects and enhances natural ecosystems, supports healthy and prosperous communities, and stimulates vigorous and diverse economic growth.

Governor Quinn Announces Millennium Reserve Initiative in Calumet Region of Chicago

Largest Project of Its Kind Will Provide 140,000 Acres of Green Space for Illinois Families

CHICAGO – December 9, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn was joined by federal, state and local officials today to announce a major partnership and conservation initiative that will significantly increase natural green space in Chicago. The Millennium Reserve is the largest open space project in the country, which will enhance public recreation opportunities in 140,000 acres of land in the Calumet region. Today, Governor Quinn announced the start of the Millennium Reserve: Calumet Core phase, which involves restoration of 15,000 acres of open space.
