Are you interested in becoming a U.S. citizen, so that you can vote and exercise all your rights and responsibilities as a new American?
Illinois is the only state in the nation in which State government and community organizations have come together to offer programs to help thousands of eligible, permanent residents become naturalized, U.S. citizens. This partnership is called the New Americans Initiative (NAI). Through our partnership with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the State is directly helping immigrants to become U.S. citizens; encouraging immigrants to independently initiate their naturalization process; and helping new citizens become fully active participants in the civic life of the great State of Illinois.
Through NAI, we can answer your questions about:
- Who is eligible for citizenship and who is not?
- How much does it cost, and how long does it take?
- Do I need to speak English? How Well?
- What is on the Citizenship Test? How do I prepare?
- What are the benefits of U.S. citizenship?
New Americans can also help you with your citizenship applications, through citizenship workshops, legal advice, and referrals to citizenship and English classes, if necessary.
