Mike Atchison | Deputy Chief of Operations
Mike Atchison was named acting deputy chief for the Operations Division on January 16, 2013, and became deputy chief for the Operations Division on February 1, 2013. In addition to overseeing operations for the agency’s adult correctional centers and adult transition centers, his responsibilities also include the areas of Jail and Detention Standards, Telecom, Tactical Response Team, Operations Center and Statewide Dietary.
A veteran employee of the Illinois Department of Corrections, Atchison has served with the agency since 1986. Prior to his most recent appointment as deputy chief of the Operations Division, Atchison served as warden of Menard Correctional Center from 2011 to 2013. He was assigned to the IDOC Investigations & Intelligence Unit as the deputy commander of the southern region and held the capacity of law enforcement liaison from 2000 to 2011. As law enforcement liaison, he assisted law enforcement agencies with investigations and provided support information, facilitated interviews with offenders and assisted in special operations. Atchison also served as District 4 intelligence coordinator from 1999 to 2000, where his duties included the supervision and management of all southern region correctional center intelligence units.
From 1997 to 1999, he was assigned as internal affairs supervisor and lead institutional investigator at Menard Correctional Center. Prior to this position, he served in various capacities that included lieutenant, shift supervisor, gang intelligence officer, zone lieutenant and security specialist.
Atchison is a 2006 graduate of the FBI National Academy 226th Session.
