Sustainability

In accordance with 20 ILCS 3954 the Green Governments Illinois Act, the Illinois Department of Corrections is proud to announce the release of its first Sustainability Plan.  Building a culture of sustainability in our agency will help to make us better stewards of the resources entrusted to us.  We are dedicated to use common sense solutions, encourage innovation, and empower our staff, as well as offenders to help us in shifting the paradigm when it comes to defining our approach to sustainable practices as it relates to our daily operations.

Our paramount mission in the Department of Corrections is maintaining the safety and security of our facilities.  Working within those parameters the IDOC launched its Sustainability Initiative on Earth Day 2012.  What this means is that the department has committed to conserve energy, reduce our waste, grow more of our food and become a more self-sufficient agency. This multifaceted initiative will save taxpayer dollars, create offender vocational and job training opportunities, while reducing the environmental impacts of our operations.

The sustainable activities occurring in our facilities have been impressively far reaching and will continue flourish. An example of this is the Illinois Correctional Industries (ICI) Menard Recycling Center located at the Menard CC, near Chester, IL in rural Randolph County.  What initially started as a modest effort to pull cardboard from the prison’s waste stream as a cost savings measure has grown beyond the prison’s wall to a full-fledged Recycling Processing Center serving not only area state facilities but also most of the communities in the area.  In light of this success and as a major component in the IDOC’s Sustainability Initiative ICI has been tasked to expand this effort and build an internal recycling infrastructure within the agency using the Menard-ICI Program as the template.
