IL Lt. Gov: Keep Illinois Military Bases Open

CARBONDALE, IL - Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon is calling on Illinois congressmen to help keep the Rock Island Arsenal and other military bases in the state open.
Simon says she sent letters Friday to 10 of Illinois' 19 representatives asking them to join the new House Defense Communities Caucus, which will represent communities nationwide in danger of losing military bases.
She says the U.S. Army is considering closing the Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center at the Rock Island Arsenal.
The facility manufactures artillery, armor and small arms, and Simon says veterans hold more than half of its 1,700 jobs.
Simon says many communities in Illinois depend on military installations for their economic well-being.
Simon is chairman of the state's Interagency Military Base Support and Economic Development Committee.
