Ill. Lt. Gov. Simon wants more chances for girls
September 27, 2012
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon is seeking help creating broader experiences and opportunities for girls.
Simon on Wednesday took advantage of the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts to recruit volunteers to help girls and young women learn to "lead and succeed."
The Girl Scouts declared 2012 the "Year of the Girl."
Simon says there is a big change "from the world of our mothers to the world of our daughters." But the Democrat noted there are just 20 women heading Fortune 500 companies, three sitting female U.S. Supreme Court justices and federal fair pay legislation didn't pass until 2009.
The Girl Scouts' mission is to help girls develop courage, confidence and character. There are 20,000 Girl Scouts in central Illinois with 5,000 adult volunteers.
