SPRINGFIELD, Illinois — Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon says funding for the state's veterans homes is threatened by a growing public pension burden.

The Democrat visited the Adjutant Illinois Veterans Home in Anna Thursday to mark the holiday season with residents and highlight the service they provide.

She says veterans homes "allow us to better care for the men and women who have served our country." Simon and Department of Veterans' Affairs Director Erica Borggren visited with residents and built gingerbread houses.

The state operates homes in Anna, LaSalle, Manteno (man-TEE'-noh) and Quincy but has cut funding for them.

Gov. Pat Quinn wants lawmakers to help him craft a plan to reduce the state's pension obligation when they return to Springfield next month.
