As the deadline to file taxes approaches, Illinois' Lt. Governor Sheila Simon is calling for more transparency on how income tax dollars are spent in Illinois.
She is pushing for the introduction of taxpayer receipts - itemized lists that show where taxpayers money goes and how it fits into the state's multi-billion dollar budget.
"When you buy groceries, you automatically receive a receipt outlining how your money was spent," Simon said in a press release Sunday. "Taxpayers deserve the same clear information on how the state spends their money on education, prisons and pensions."
The receipts, which would be available for those Illinois residents who file online, could be available by the next tax filing season - beginning January 2014.
