Illinois School District Data

The Classrooms First Commission is reviewing the latest data on Illinois school districts compiled and provided by the Illinois State Board of Education. Illinois has about 870 districts, the third highest number in the country after much more populous states of California and Texas, and 220 districts operate a single school. More than 240 districts have been on the state academic improvement list for consecutive years and may be appropriate for review.

The “appropriate and effective” size for an elementary school is 300-400 students, with 400-800 students in middle and high schools, according to Oregon researchers. These enrollment numbers, and the correlating appropriate and effective district size, may also benefit from review.

ILEARN
The Illinois Local Education Agency Retrieval Network (ILEARN) provides information on how the business of education is conducted. Using ILEARN, you can access and compare information about specific districts, counties, or regions of the state.

Illinois Interactive Report Card
The Interactive Illinois Report Card (IIRC) website provides test results and school improvement information on public schools and school districts. Some of the information on the IIRC site can also be found in the annual Illinois School Report Cards posted in PDF format on the Illinois
State Board of Education website. The IIRC, however, includes interactive graphics; longitudinal trends from 1999 to the present; advanced search and school comparison capabilities; instructional materials; e-Plans; and individual student data in a secure, password protected location.
