CHICAGO — The state’s lieutenant governor has pitched in to help clean up a Chicago beach.

Sheila Simon, an avid kayaker, joined the Shedd Aquarium’s Great Lakes Conservation Team at the 12th Street beach Saturday.

Her office says she and about 50 volunteers combed the beach for three hours picking up trash and recyclables.

The cleanup was held as part of “It’s Our River Day,” an annual event celebrating the state’s rivers. More than 30 cleanups, kayaking trips and other events were held statewide.

Simon says rivers and lakes “shape our geography, economy and community identities.”

She is chairwoman of the Illinois, Mississippi and Wabash and Ohio River Coordinating Councils. The councils review state and federal programs that affect the waterways and raise awareness of watershed issues.
