Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon to talk banjo in Chicago
November 4, 2012
CHICAGO — Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon will talk about the banjo at the Chicago Humanities Festival.
Simon started playing the banjo in law school and performs with the blues and boogie band, Loose Gravel. On Sunday she will introduce Duke University professor Laurent Dubois. Dubois will present a lecture at the festival titled "The Banjo," focusing on his research about the culture and history of the instrument.
Simon says the banjo has deep roots in American culture but the instrument also has African origins.
The Chicago Humanities Festival spans ten days and features nearly 80 different presentations and lectures.
