With some down time coming up after the holiday glow wears off and before it’s time for back-to-school, how about some volunteering?
Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon says there are many worthy causes, including food pantries and women’s shelters. And there seem to be more charities than there are hours or dollars. “It’s hard to make everything stretch,” says Simon, “but I think, particularly at a time when government resources are scarce, we have to step up with our own private donations and our own donations of labor places that we believe are doing a good job.”
Simon and her staff sorted food at the Central Illinois Food Bank warehouse in Springfield. The organization supplies pantries in 21 Downstate counties.
