The legislation, House Bill 5248 sponsored by State Rep. Bill Cunningham (D-Chicago), would require all degree-granting institutions in Illinois to publish annually total costs, completion rates and other information and post the data on the Internet.
The Illinois Senate approved the plan 56-0 on May 25, but the bill has cooling its heels in the House Rules Committee ever since, despite Cunningham filing a motion to concur on the senate amendment when it arrived in the House.
In addition to Cunningham, House co-sponsors include State Reps. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston), Bob Pritchard (R-Hinckley), Naomi Jakobsson (D-Champaign) and Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills), who added herself to the sponsorship roll on December 4.
Simon says all 12 public university presidents and the Illinois Community College Board presidents’ council submitted letters recently to Madigan calling for the bill to be released for a vote before the current session ends on January 9, 2013.
“I appreciate the great support we have received for Senate Bill 5248, and I look forward to working with Speaker Madigan to bring this bill to the House floor for a vote.”
