SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois' lieutenant governor has added her name to a resolution supporting comprehensive immigration reform.
Sheila Simon's office says the Carbondale Democrat is attending the annual meeting of the National Lieutenant Governors Association in Oklahoma City. The lieutenant governors at the meeting plan to vote on the resolution and a way for foreign students to become members of the U.S. workforce.
The resolution is non-binding, but emphasizes the association members' support of the immigration reform proposal passed by the U.S. Senate last month. The legislation improves border safety and provides a path to citizenship for some immigrants. The bill is currently awaiting House action.
The lieutenant governors are also meeting with experts about high-volume oil and gas drilling, also known as hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," and the federal farm bill.
