Lt. Gov. Simon wants hearing on sand mine near Starved Rock
March 13, 2012
SPRINGFIELD — Lt. Governor Sheila Simon wants LaSalle County officials to ask for a public hearing on a proposed sand mine near Starved Rock State Park, but the county board has voted not to.
The county board in January granted Mississippi Sand a special-use permit for the mine, despite concerns that it would disturb wildlife and hurt tourism. Mississippi Sand says the mine would create 39 jobs and pump millions into the economy
It's up to the state Department of Natural Resources to grant permits, but only the county may request a public hearing.
Simon says a hearing would show the county is committed to an open process. But on Monday night board members voted 8-16-1 against asking for such a hearing.
