CARBONDALE – August 23, 2012. Lt. Governor Sheila Simon will open the Du Quoin State Fair on Friday night with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the front gate and co-host the fair’s annual blood drive beginning Sept. 1 in the First Heat Building.
Simon said the fair comes in the midst of a nationwide shortage of blood donations. In June, the American Red Cross issued a national appeal calling on citizens across the country to donate blood after donations were 50,000 pints lower than expected. Since the appeal, the Red Cross has seen an uptick in donations, but blood supplies remain low.
To encourage blood donors, Simon will be the first to donate blood at the drive’s opening day, Saturday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. in the First Heat Building. The drive runs for three days.
In addition to the opening night ribbon cutting and blood drive, Simon will visit the fair on Saturday, August 25 to speak to southern Illinois community leaders at a Local Officials and Community Partners Day luncheon.
Simon will also display a Mitsubishi iMiEV electric vehicle in her office’s tent to promote green living throughout the 10-day fair. Visitors can play an interactive racing game and have their picture taken behind the wheel of the iMiEV or a Mitsubishi Outlander that was produced in Bloomington-Normal. The photos will be available for free to the public on Facebook.
Lt. Governor Simon’s tent is located near the grandstand and will be open Saturday, August 25 to Monday, September 3. The tent hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on weekends and Labor Day.
