Lt. Governor takes college tour to ICC

February 22, 2011

Illinois Central College was the second stop on Lt. Governor Sheila Simon's tour of all the community colleges in the state.

Simon toured the facility and met with a student from Midland High School who participates in the Fast Start Program. It allows Midland students to take ICC classes and get dual credit toward high school and college.

Midland Senior Liz Koehler says these classes have allowed her to decide what she wants to major in without the hassles of changing her mind while in college only. She says this has helped her stay active in high school, while getting college credit.

Simon says community colleges will be vital in growing the number of college graduates in Illinois. She is shooting for that number to grow from 40 to 60-percent by the year 2025 to allow Illinois to better compete in the global workforce.
