  1. Lt. Governor

Simon Working to Improve Military Children's Education

Jan. 15, 2014

It may come as no surprise to you, but military families move three times more often than average civilian families. That's one reason why Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon is working with the military to improve education for military children.

Simon is the chair of Inter-agency Military Base Support and Economic Development. This organization is looking at what does and doesn't work to help transition military children between schools.

With military families moving in and out of our school districts, it creates challenges for their kids to have normal educational, extracurricular, and social lives.

"We know that military families are going to be moving a lot. We know that we can expect many more in the state of Illinois. We want to make sure for things that are in our control as a state that we do an excellent job for those folks that are serving our nation so well," said Simon.

Some of the key problem areas facing military kids are enrollment, class placement, extracurricular activities, access to kindergarten, and different graduation requirements for different school districts.
