A series of summits hosted by Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon will call on government and university officials to keep college affordable for Illinois families.

Simon kicks off her first event today at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A similar event is set for Monday at SIU Carbondale. No specific time or place on campus has been announced.

Average costs for getting a degree at a public university have increased 128 percent since 1980, adjusted for inflation. That rate far exceeds the pace average family incomes have increased, Simon said, and it is important universities, as well as state and federal governments, examine what is driving up prices.

“We’ve set a goal to have 60 percent of working-age adults to hold college credentials by 2025,” Simon said.

Simon said she is backing legislation that would standardize college cost reporting procedures, helping students see more clearly what it will cost them to attend each institution.
