Steve grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he assisted a south side VISTA. After receiving his B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis he attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While at Northwestern he served with the Urban Training Center for the Christian Mission primarily on citizen participation necessary for “Great Society” funding devoted to construction of the Northwestern University’s Rehabilitation Institute and establishment of health clinics on Chicago’s west side.
After attending Oakton Community College where he obtained a substance abuse counseling certificate he moved to Jo Daviess County. There, in Galena’s County Health Department‘s AmeriCorps position he organized several programs and coalition activities with the Illinois Public Health Association’s program sponsorship. Then as a VISTA in Carroll County with the Savanna Vision Network he continued his various efforts serving on several local and regional community organizations. After serving as a volunteer with the Peace Corps near Petra in Jordan during “The Arab Spring” he returned to northwest Illinois and eastern Iowa helping to sponsor an NCCC team for six weeks in the summer of 2011 through the faith based Great River Outreach and serving on various emergency preparedness, juvenile justice, conservation, and community development organizations.
In his capacity as the VISTA volunteer center coordinator for the city of Dubuque he will research and assist activities designed to increase agency capacity focused on meeting the needs of low income residents through volunteer programs.
