Steve grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he assisted a south side VISTA. After a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis he received an M.A. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While at Northwestern he served with the Urban Training Center for the Christian Mission to develop citizen participation required for initial federal funding of Northwestern University’s Rehabilitation Institute downtown and west side health clinics.
He joined AmeriCorps for two years in the I.P.H.A. program hosted by the Jo Daviess County Health Department after being awarded a substance abuse counseling certificate with honors from Oakton Community College in Des Plaines. Then as a VISTA in Carroll County with the Savanna Vision Network and other community development organizations, he continued to focus on emergency preparedness, rural conservation, and substance abuse education. After a stint as a youth development volunteer with the Peace Corps near Petra in Jordan during “The Arab Spring” he returned to northwest Illinois and eastern Iowa to sponsor an NCCC team for six weeks in the summer of 2011 through the faith based Great River Outreach. These teams have continued to return to the area every summer through a variety of local and national sponsorships. With the completion of a second VISTA term focused on meeting the needs of low income residents through volunteer programs in Dubuque, Iowa managed by the City’s Human Rights Department he plans to complete the landscaping of his house near Galena, Illinois where he serves primarily on the L.E.P.C. and Juvenile Justice coalitions.
