On Monday, November 17, 2008, the Southern Illinois Region of the Illinois Volunteer Management Network met at the University of Illinois Extension county office in Mt. Vernon, IL. The meeting consisted of updates from the Serve Illinois Commission (staff and commissioners), a panel discussion on volunteer screening and risk management issues with panelists representing the University of Illinois Extension and the Illinois Attorney General's office. Volunteer leaders were also presented information, as requested at the region's summer meeting, from representatives of United Way of Greater St. Louis Volunteer Center and the Volunteer Centers of Illinois.
VMN business items addressed included the formation of a regional committee for the 2009 Southern Illinois Volunteerism Conference, the possibility of a group starting a volunteer center or similar connector agency in Carbondale, Marion and/or Mt. Vernon, and other local announcements. Meeting attendees had refreshments and the opportunity to network and share informational materials with one another.
