Cutting Waste for IllinoisTaxpayers

By eliminating one unnecessary trash pickup at the Hill Correctional Center, the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) is both cutting costs and saving staff resources. The Hill Correctional Center was paying Waste Management $85,563.40 per year to collect waste from the institution, though most of the dumpsters were not even half full the day of trash pick-up. Once staff realized this, they increased their recycling efforts, reduced the number of dumpsters at the facility and eliminated one day of trash pick-ups - going from 4 pick-ups a week to 3. The IDOC looks to save $27,462 and just over 40 hours of manpower, each year, through these efforts. The Department will reinvest the savings into other areas where funding has been reduced.
