Eliminating the Stigma for Ex-Offenders

Offenders who are being released from the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) are now afforded a new start at life. As opposed to being released in state issued clothing, like a T-shirt and sweatpants, they can select an outfit from “Clothing Closets” which are now up and running at most correctional facilities throughout Illinois. This has proven to be an invaluable initiative as it removes the stigma associated with those who are seen wearing prison issued clothing in communities and builds the confidence of those who are re-entering society. By supplying offenders with donated clothing items and shoes, the IDOC reduces its need to purchase state issued clothing and anticipates a savings of approximately $500,000 per year.
