Recycling for the Environment and Efficiency

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) partnered with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) to create a new definition for bio-solids to allow the materials to be used as a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizer and soil amendments. A year after the law was changed, about 1% of the 100,000 dry tons of bio-solids generated at MWRD’s largest plant was landfilled. The remaining materials were land applied or further processed into fertilizer pellets. This protects the environment while producing other revenues for the State of Illinois.
