    Security Enhancement Measures

    Library Building - All library visitors must check items, including but not limited to personal items, carrying cases, purses, coats, food, and beverages, in a locker. Lockers are available free of charge. Library visitors performing research are invited to bring a laptop, notes and required amounts of unbound paper, and writing implements into the research areas.
    Museum Building – For security reasons, please limit personal belongings brought into the museum. All bags will be inspected. No food, beverages, candy, or gum are allowed in the Museum. Lockers are available for the cost of .25 cents.


    Exhibit is included with Museum admission; however, guests may view this exhibit only with admission of $5 per person for those 5 years of age and older.

    All Aboard: America's Love of Railroads, commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. The exhibit is appropriate for all ages and will be on exhibition until December 31, 2020.

  4. Where can I park my car when visiting the Library or Museum?

    Parking is available in the Museum Parking Garage, located on the corner of Sixth and Madison Streets. The rate is 75 cents per 1/2 hour or $1.50 per hour. Hours: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

  5. What is the admission fee?

    The Library has no admission charge. The Museum's admission fee is:

    We are a participant of the Museums for All program which is a signature access program of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), administered by the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM). The program supports those receiving food assistance (SNAP) benefits visiting the ALPLM for a minimal fee of $3 per person, up to four people, with the presentation of a SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card and valid photo ID, the names on the EBT card and photo ID must match. Museums for All is part of the ALPLM’s broad commitment to seek, include, and welcome all audiences.

  7. Are there special rates for school groups?

    The admission fee can be waived or reduced for school/college groups holding a valid reservation made through Visit Springfield on their Group Travel Reservation Request page. All other scheduled groups of 15 or more guests get discounts.

  8. Do groups need to reserve time in advance? If so, who is the contact?

    Yes, all group visits of 15 or more must be scheduled through through Visit Springfield on their Group Travel Reservation Request page. Visit Springfield is available by telephone at 217-789-2360.

  9. When is the best time to schedule a visit?

    If you want to avoid possible lines at the Journeys or theaters, schedule your visit Sundays and Mondays, or from mid-November through the first of March.

  10. How long are the presentations in the two theaters?

    The multi-screen, multi-stage special effects Union Theater presentation, "Lincoln's Eyes" runs [approximately] 17 minutes and tells Lincoln's story through the eyes of an artist painting Lincoln's portrait. The Holavision® Theater's "Ghosts of the Library" presentation is [approximately] 9 minutes and answers the questions: "Why does history matter? Why do we save all this old stuff?" (Strobe lighting and loud noises are associated with Union Theater.)

  11. Are the theaters ADA compliant?

    Each theater is equipped with ADA devices for both the hearing and visually impaired. Our enhanced audio device boosts the show's soundtrack, while the visual device provides an audio narration of the show's action. Also available for the deaf are reader boards, which provide closed caption.

  12. When are the theater shows presented?

    Both theater presentations run throughout the day. Check the posted show schedule at each theater upon arrival to assist in planning your visit.

  13. For what languages are the show scripts translated?

    For both theater presentations we offer translated scripts in French, German, Japanese, Mandarin,  and Spanish. To request a copy for use while at the Museum, locate a staff member outside the theater for assistance.

  14. What is the minimum age children should be before they can visit the Museum?

    The museum and its exhibits are designed for students in the 4th grade and up. Some of the exhibits and theater presentations may be disturbing for younger children.

  15. Is there something at the Museum for younger children?

    Mrs. Lincoln's Attic is a hands-on play area for children ages 3-12 and their families. School students with their chaperone are welcome but, once maximum capacity is reached, entrance will be stopped with preference given to visiting families.

  16. How extensive are the Museum's permanent exhibits?

    The permanent exhibits are comprised of two "Journeys," two Theaters, a Treasures Gallery, Mrs. Lincoln's Attic and Ask Mr. Lincoln. These total more than 40,000 sq ft of state-of-the-art exhibitory.

  18. Why does the Museum feel cooler sometimes throughout the year?

    To properly conserve our artifacts and other objects on display the temperature at the Museum must be maintained at 70 degrees. This makes the Museum feel a little cooler during the summer months.  We recommend wearing a sweater.

  19. Where is photography allowed in the Museum?

    Flash photography is allowed in the Plaza and Mrs. Lincoln’s Attic.  Non-flash photography and videotaping is allowed in the Journeys and Galleries.  No photography or videotaping allowed in the theaters. Selfie sticks are prohibited.

  20. Can educators get in free to the Museum?

    Yes. Educators may download or print a complimentary educator pass from our web site at Online_Educator_Pass.pdf​ to use in preparation for an upcoming school trip. Passes cannot be used on the date of a scheduled school tour and must be accompanied by a valid teacher identification card or a letter from a school administrator on school letterhead.

  21. Are wheelchairs/strollers available at the Museum?

    Yes, complimentary wheelchairs and strollers are available. You can request these services at the will-call desk.

  22. Is food service available in the Museum?

    Yes, SUBWAY® offers in-house dining daily from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

  23. Is there an outdoor location nearby for picnics, etc.?

  24. Do you have a Museum Store?

    Yes, the Museum Store has thousands of items for sale. Among the more popular items are books, souvenirs, apparel, and toys. Visit the museum store online today!

  25. How much time should I plan for my visit?

    It is suggested to allow at least 2 ½ to 3 hours for your visit.

  26. Are guided tours of the Museum available?

    No, the Museum is designed to be a self-guided experience.

  27. What kind of library is the Presidential Library?

    The Presidential Library is a research library, not a public library. Researchers should check in at the front security desk before entering the main research room.

  28. Do individuals receive a library card?

    No. Researchers will receive a researcher card when they check in at the reference desk.  Please bring in a photo ID that has an address on it such as a driver's license.  The researcher card will allow you to view materials onsite as our collections do not circulate and the card cannot be used at other libraries.

  29. Does the Presidential Library have books other than books about Lincoln?

    Yes. The Presidential Library is a public, non-circulating research library, specializing in Abraham Lincoln and all of Illinois history. Collections include books, pamphlets, maps, and periodicals; photographs, films, tapes, and broadsides; manuscripts; and Illinois newspapers on microfilm. The library contains extensive resources on the Civil War and many publications useful for genealogical research, as well as the renowned Lincoln Collection.

  34. What kind of events take place in Union Square Park?

    The Union Square Park, directly across the street from the Museum, has been the location of many free events and performances, including the 33rd Illinois Vol. Regiment Band and the 10th Illinois Vol. Cavalry Regiment Band (both Civil War re-enactment groups); Mary Lincoln's Strawberry Party (a summertime family event); July 4th celebration, New Century Orchestra, Springfield International Folk Dancers, and many more musical performances throughout the year.

  35. Is the Presidential Library and Museum near other Lincoln sites? Which ones?

    Yes. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is near several other historic sites: the Old State Capitol, Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices and Lincoln's Home are just blocks away. The Dana — Thomas House, Vachel Lindsay Home, Governor's Mansion and the State Capitol are also within walking distance.

    Our wonderful volunteer corps performs a variety of key functions for the Museum and Library.
