The Illinois Environmental Barriers Act ensures Illinois citizens with disabilities are treated fairly and equally. The Act requires that certain newly-constructed or renovated buildings must comply with accessibility standards that guarantee they are safe and readily accessible to persons with disabilities. These standards are known as the Illinois Accessibility Code.

The revised Illinois Accessibility Code has been filed with the Secretary of State and published in the Illinois Register to begin the rulemaking process in accordance with Illinois Administrative Procedure Act. Comments can be submitted until March 26, 2018.
