Choosing a College, University or Career/Technical Education

Need help choosing a college, university or career/trade school?

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) is committed to helping make college more accessible and affordable for Illinois families. ISAC’s college access and outreach initiatives provide direct assistance to students and families in navigating the college-going and financial aid process.

ISAC publishes the Handbook of Illinois Postsecondary Institutions annually. It contains up-to-date financial aid and admission information for institutions approved for participation in ISAC's scholarship and grant programs, as well as other federal and institutional programs.

Visit the ISAC Student Portal for online tools to help you with college and scholarship search, financial aid planning, money management, and even career and job searches

ISACorps members assist students in career exploration, college selection, test preparation, scholarship searches, application completion and the college financial aid process.

The Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC) is dedicated to serving students as they explore options and make choices about pursuing postsecondary education. Resources include:

U.S. Department of Education resources:

  • College Navigator: search for and compare colleges on all sorts of criteria including costs, majors offered, size of school, campus safety and graduation rates.
  • College Affordability and Transparency Center: information about tuition and net prices as postsecondary institutions.  The site highlights institutions with high and low tuition and fees as well as high and low net prices (the price of attendance minus grant and scholarship aid).
  • Database of Accredited Post-secondary Institutions and Programs: The accreditation database is compiled as a public service by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Post-secondary Education. Click the tab that says “Search by Accrediting Agency” for a list of accredited two- and four-year institutions.

The College and Universities Listing of Historically Black Colleges provides addresses, phone numbers, enrollment and tuition information on historically black colleges and universities.

Learn Psychology's Guide to Helping People aims to help college students and grads choose academic and career paths that center around helping others, including counseling, therapy and psychology.
