Location and Access:
East half of Section 35, T20N R1E 3PM, Barnett Township, about 0.5 mile south of state route 10. Access is from County Road 500E.
Description:
Mettler Woods is a 77-acre preserve with grade B dry-mesic upland forest, grade C forest, as well as early successional forest; all of which are natural communities representative of the Grand Prairie Section of the Grand Prairie Natural Division. The dry-mesic forest supports large canopy individuals of species such as white oak, bur oak, and shagbark hickory. Much of the southwestern portion of the preserve has been severely damaged by a direct tornado hit in 2003. This area should be avoided due to the danger posed by a great amount of standing dead timber.
