All areas of Matthiessen State Park will be closed for hunting on the following dates!
- November 19-21
- December 2-5
- December 10-12
- December 30-January 2
- January 14-16
The horseback campground, horseback trails from campground, and the grassy overflow parking lot at the Matthiessen Dells are closed until furthe notice.
NOTICE: A new hunting area will be open this fall at Matthiessen State Park. The area is located South of 23rd Road, west of 675th Road and east of 550th Road. The hunting sign-in boxes will be at the Margery C. Carlson Nature Preserve parking lot (Lot 11) and Lot 34 on East 550th Road. The site will only have two of the three lots designated on the map open at this time. The area will accommodate four (4) hunters at a time and is not open to non-hunters. All other individuals face a minimum $195 fine. Hunters will need be out of the site one hour after the end of legal hunting time unless removing a harvested animal. The area will open Oct. 1, 2021. Hunters may not sign in prior to 4:00 a.m. North 23rd Road is a township road and may contain hazards. All sites are subject to closure due to park needs. Hunters are reminded to please follow all posted regulations and information at the site.
Matthiessen Dells area and Vermillion River Area typically shutdown on weekends May through October when they have reached full capacity (parking lots are full) around 10 a.m. and will not reopen again until 3 p.m.
Playgrounds and picnic shelters are first come, first served.
Please practice social distancing at all times.
Masks must be worn inside of the public restrooms and buildings regardless of vaccination status.
NOT ALLOWED FOR YOUR SAFETY, the SAFETY OF OTHERS, and the SAFETY OF THE SITE:
No Swimming in park waterfalls, creeks, or the River.
Rock Climbing/rapelling is not allowed anywhere in the park.
Bicycles, scooters, skates, and skateboards are not allowed on the trails in the Matthiessen Dells Area. Bike trails can be found at the Matthiessen Vermillion River Area only.
Drones are not allowed at either park.
Metal detecting is not allowed at either park.
It is illegal to possess alcohol at either park.
It is illegal to possess intoxicating substances at either park.
It is illegal to go off trail or make new trails at either park. Please follow paved trails that are wider than two people and marked with posts, dots on trees, and maps at intersections.

Canyons, streams, prairie and forest combine to delight visitors at Matthiessen State Park. Located in LaSalle County, approximately 4 miles south of Utica, and 3 miles east of Oglesby, Matthiessen is a paradise for those interested in geology, as well as recreation. Visitors can expect to see beautiful rock formations in addition to unusual and abundant vegetation and wildlife. All of this, along with park and picnic facilities, make Matthiessen State Park a popular choice for an outing.
