INTRODUCTION: The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for providing outdoor recreation opportunity for the residents of the State. Of particular concern is providing safe hunting areas on public lands throughout the State. This Hunter Fact Sheet contains information relating to the small game hunting program at the Mazonia/Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area. Mazonia is characterized by extreme topography characteristic of strip mining operations. Numerous bodies of water ranging from .2 to 30 plus acres are found throughout the site. Access is limited to foot traffic only over a large portion of the area. Chronic Wasting Disease has been found in Grundy, Kankakee and Will Counties near this site. Please have your deer tested.  Further information regarding CWD, including sampling locations, may be found at   This year fishing will be allowed in conjunction with the upland game season. Be aware of your surroundings.

Active habitat management will be occurring throughout the year on the site.

DIRECTIONS: 3 Miles south of Braidwood just off Rte. 53, and within easy access of I-55.

Upland game, North Unit Only Day after close of central duck season through statewide close, statewide hours Hunters must sign in and sign out and report harvest, closed Mondays and Tuesdays, Christmas and New Years Day. May only hunt in areas designated as open on site map. 400 sq. in. Blaze Orange required. No non-hunters in the field.

Mazonia is now part of the Windshield Card access program. To obtain a permit, go to:  You must also report your harvest and hunter trips via the system, even if you did not hunt. You must also report your harvest via the statewide call-in system. The South Unit is in Kankakee County. Failure to do so will result in loss of hunting privileges for the next hunting season. Hunting is only allowed in areas designated as open. Archery hunters may also take coyotes and raccoons by use of bow and arrow. No non-hunters in the field.





TrappingStatewide dates and hoursThis is a new program.  Trappers interested in participating shall send a post card to the site indicating interest along with their name, hunter ID number, address and phone number by August 31.  Names will be drawn, and successful trappers will be mailed information and maps.  Trappers must then self-issue a windshield card at:  You will be required to report your harvest back to the windshield permit site, even if you did not trap.


All statewide bag limits apply. All hunters are reminded that this is a multiple use site. Fishing may be occurring throughout the site. Please report any turkey sightings to site staff. All regulations found in the Illinois Wildlife Code of 1971, General Administrative Order 510, Federal Regulations apply unless the site regulations are more restrictive.
