Revis Hill Prairie Nature Preserve

​Location: Located in Mason County on the bluffs of the Sangamon River Valley. The site is bounded on three sides by private land and on the south by Mason County Road 660N. Access to the area is from IL RT 97 or IL RT 29 by way of Mason County Road 710N, known locally as the Easton-Kilbourne Blacktop. Turn south at the intersection of Mason county Roads 710N and 2620E, and go ½ mile to Mason County Road 660N. Turn east on Mason County Road 660N and proceed ½ mile to a marked parking lot on the north side of the road. The parking lot is located on the natural area. Active habitat management will be occurring throughout the year on the site, including prescribed burning. 
 
Description: Revis Hill Prairie Nature Preserve is less than 420 acres in size. Cover is native hill prairie on the upper reaches with upland forest in the lower reaches and in the numerous ravines dissecting the area. Topography ranges from 530 feet in the ravine bottoms to 670 feet on the ridge tops. Soils are predominately silt-loam.

Whitetail deer are the only species open to hunting. Firearm deer hunting permits are procured through random drawing, applications available online at: www2.illinois.gov/dnr Archery deer hunting is by statewide permit available online or at licensed vendor. Hunters are required to register at dnr2.illinois.gov/Windshieldcard for a free hunter windshield card. Sand Ridge State Forest will be listed in the dropdown box for Region 4. Hunters must register for a free site windshield card prior to hunting. Windshield card must be posted and visible from outside of vehicles. Harvest must be recorded on the same web page by February 15th of each year. Deer stands or ground blinds must be removed at the end of each day’s hunt. Hunting is allowed north of the blacktop on the south boundary of the property.
 
Prescribed fire may be conducted during archery hunting season.  Notification to the public for prescribed burning will be posted on the Sand Ridge State Forest web page and Sand Ridge telephone answering machine, 309-597-2212.  Additionally, prior to igniting any prescribed fire a horn will sound 3 times to notify any person within the burn unit they must exit the area within 45 minutes. A second horn will sound 3 times 15 minutes after the first, indicating 30 minutes to exit area.
