Tapley Woods

2019-2020 Season

Location: Jo Daviess County, 5 miles west of Elizabeth, adjacent to and on both sides of US Rt. 20 and IL Rt. 84.
Description : Total Acres: 259.16; Huntable Acres: 259.16, all timbered.

The topography of the area is very steep, consisting of unglaciated ridges. The entire hunting area is timbered, with mature oak and hickory the dominant species. Undergrowth is dense which makes walking difficult. The area is bordered by private, cultivated lands with timbered draws and ridge tops.

The excellent timbered habitat on this area provides optimum cover for both fox and gray squirrel. Since the timbered area is fairly large and dense, gray squirrel will be the dominant species. The border of the area will provide good fox squirrel hunting, particularly when corn and open lands adjoin the timber. Deer are fairly common in this area and should provide some good hunting, however, a deer taken at the bottom of the ridge will be difficult to carry out. Rabbit populations in this area are low and hunting success will reflect this. Night lighting for raccoon is allowed, however, the raccoon population is not high. This site is owned and managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Management activities on this site may occur throughout the year, including the hunting seasons.
