2015 Deer Pin Will Honor "Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks
SPRINGFIELD, IL Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Wayne Rosenthal announced today that the 2015 Deer Pin, available to successful deer hunters next fall, will have a Cub Blue background to honor the memory of Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks. Banks died Jan. 23, 2015. Banks started his professional baseball career in 1951, playing for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Baseball League. Following two years of military service, his contract was purchased by the Chicago Cubs, where he played for 19 seasons from 1953-1971. In 1977, Mr. Cub was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Illinois hunters and conservationists respect the ideals of hard work and fair play that Ernie Banks lived by every day, said Rosenthal. Making our deer pin Cub Blue for 2015 is just a small token of our appreciation for the example Ernie Banks set for all of us.

Deer, turkey and morel pins are available for purchase from the Illinois Conservation Foundation for $5 each. The new 2015 deer pins will be available for sale in time for the 2015 season, which begins with the opening of archery deer hunting on Oct. 1. Pins from previous years also are available.
