Grand Illinois Trail and Parks Bicycle Tour Set for June 15-20
OREGON The League of Illinois Bicyclists (LIB), partnering with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), is leading an annual bicycle tour of northwestern Illinois from June 15 to 20.  The popular six-day Grand Illinois Trail and Parks (GITAP) Ride will start and end in Oregon, IL, with overnight stops in Freeport, Galena (two nights), Savanna, and Morrison.

In its 12th year, GITAP introduces bicycle tourists to the rural roads, trails, and towns of the Grand Illinois Trail.  Each year, the ride tackles a different section of the 500-mile northern Illinois loop, which is coordinated by the IDNR.

Over 200 riders from 14 states and averaging 57 years of age will bike between 275-450 miles during the week.  Most will camp at high schools, a state park, and private campground while others will stay at local hotels.  Other economic impact comes from the use of local caterers, as well as food and drink establishments along the way.

The ride will also feature a trail-opening ceremony in Morrison on June 19, as well as visits with mayors and other local officials at host cities.
