Grand American: The World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta is the venue for the 116th Amateur Trapshooting Association Grand American Trapshooting Championships, Aug. 5-15. For more information on the world’s premier shooting sports event, go to the ATA website at

Visit Conservation World:  Enjoy free youth and family entertainment and activities at Conservation World during the Illinois State Fair, Aug. 14-23 in Springfield.  Families will love the free Timberworks Lumberjack Show, Whip Guy western show, and Voyageur canoe rides.  Kids can try to catch a fish or practice their skills at the free BB and archery ranges. Visitors will find plenty to do, and a shady place to sit on a park bench and relax while visiting Conservation World – open from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. every day of the Illinois State Fair.

Firearm Deer Permits:  Permit applications will be accepted until Aug. 21 for the new third lottery drawing for 2015 Illinois firearm and muzzleloader deer permits.  For details, check the IDNR website at

Fall Wild Turkey Shotgun Permits:  Hunters may apply for the second lottery for 2015 Fall Wild Turkey Shotgun permits through Aug. 24 (third lottery deadline for fall shotgun turkey permits will be Sept. 21).  The season dates are Oct. 24 – Nov. 1.  For more information:

Resident Archery Deer and Fall Turkey Permits:  Resident combination archery deer permits, resident antlerless-only archery deer permits, and resident archery fall turkey hunting permits are available over-the-counter from DNR Direct license and permit vendors (as of Aug. 4).  Find a vendor near you at this link:
Archery Deer Reminder:  Illinois 2015 Resident Either-Sex Archery Deer Permit applications will be accepted through Sept. 1, 2015.  The PDF application form is available online at this link:

Non-Resident Archery Deer and Fall Turkey Permits:  The remaining non-resident 2015 Illinois combination archery deer permits (one antlerless permit and one either sex permit) are available over-the-counter (OTC) from DNR Direct license and permit vendors.  Non-resident archery fall turkey permits are also available OTC from DNR Direct license and permit vendors.  Find a vendor near you at this link:

Youth Deer Permits:  Resident and non-resident Illinois Youth Firearm Deer permits are available over-the-counter (OTC) as of Aug. 4 from DNR Direct license and permit vendors, by phone at 1-888-673-7648 (1-888-6PERMIT), or online at through Aug. 31 (Permits available OTC only after Aug. 31).  The Youth Deer Hunt is Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 10-12, 2015. Upland Game Permits:  Hunters may apply through Aug. 31 for the Illinois 2015 Free Upland Game Hunt Permit program.  Applications must be made online, and successful applicants will receive a confirmation by mail.  The online application information is available at this link:

Public Duck and Goose Hunting Area Permits:  Resident hunters may apply online from Aug. 16-31 for the first lottery for the Illinois 2015 Public Duck and Goose Hunting Area Permit program.  The second lottery application period will be Sept. 1-15 for those unsuccessful resident applicants from the first lottery, residents who didn’t apply in the first lottery, and non-residents.  The third lottery application period will be Sept. 15-28.  All initial applications must be made online:

Controlled Pheasant Permits:  Information is now available online for hunters to apply for 2015-16 Illinois controlled pheasant hunting opportunities available at 18 IDNR sites.  Fourteen of the sites are operated by the IDNR, while four other sites are managed by concessionaire T. Peach Festival:  Pere Marquette Lodge at Pere Marquette State Park near Grafton hosts the annual Peach Festival on Sun., Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.  For more information, check the lodge website at

Stone Forts Program:  The Friends of Giant City will host a free public program “Mysterious Stone Forts of Southern Illinois” at the Giant City State Park Visitor Center on Tues., Aug. 11 at 6 p.m.  The presenter is award-winning history teacher Mark Motsinger, who will discuss a previously unknown stone fort discovered south of Carrier Mills, IL.  The Giant City State Park Visitor Center is located at 235 Giant City Road, Makanda, IL.

ESPB Meeting:  The Illinois Endangered Species Protection Board will conduct its next quarterly meeting on Fri., Aug. 14 at 11:30 a.m. at the Shedd Aquarium, 1200 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60605. The meeting is open to the public.  For more information, phone 217-785-8687.

INPC Meeting:  The 221st meeting of the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission will be held on Tues., Sept. 15 beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Black Hawk State Historic Site, 1510 46th Ave., Rock Island, IL 61201.  The meeting is open to the public.  For more information, phone 217-785-8686.

Cold-Blooded Creatures:  Learn about the native reptiles of southernmost Illinois at a special program on “Cold-Blooded Creatures of the Cache Watershed” on Sat., Aug. 22 from 1-4 p.m. at the Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center, 8885 State Route 37 South, Cypress, IL 62923.

Youth/Women Wingshooting Clinic in Champaign Co.:  IDNR, the Illinois Conservation Foundation and primary sponsors Friends of the NRA, Champaign County Pheasants Forever, Piatt County Pheasants Forever and Midwest Pottyhouse are sponsoring a wingshooting clinic for beginning shotgunners at Capel Farm, one mile south of Fisher on Champaign County Road 2900 N.  The clinic will be held on Sat., Aug. 29 and Sun., Aug. 30 for women and young wingshooters ages 10 and up.  The clinic will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.  Registration is at 10:30 a.m. both days.  The professional wingshooting teachers are certified National Sporting Clays Association wing shooting instructors.  There is no charge and all supplies are provided, including lunch.  Co-sponsor members are supplying the manpower and the funding for both sessions.   Registration forms are available on the IDNR website wingshooting clinic schedule page at:
