Public, Emergency Responders Invited to Great Lakes Water Safety Class
CHICAGO Swimmers, surfers, and other Lake Michigan recreational users along with police, rescue personnel and other emergency responders are invited to a free Great Lakes Water Safety Class hosted by the Illinois Coastal Management Program.

Class sessions will be held on Sunday, June 1 at the Waukegan Yacht Club in Waukegan; Saturday, June 7 at Montrose Beach in Chicago; and, Sunday, June 8 at Rainbow Beach in Chicago.

Drowning is a leading cause of death and injury among those spending time in and near the water.  Since 2010, there have been more than 340 deaths due to drowning on the Great Lakes.  We hope these free safety classes will help save lives on Lake Michigan, said Marc Miller, director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which administers the Illinois Coastal Management Program.

The Great Lakes Water Safety Class programs will be presented by the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.  The presentations at each of the class sessions will teach participants to:

 Recognize the signs of drowning and how to identify a person in trouble;
 Recognize the dangers of the surf environment;
 Understand dangerous currents (how, where, and why dangerous currents occur);
 Understand the Flip, Float, & Follow survival strategy in dangerous currents;
 Understand how a flotation device (throw ring, rope, surfboard or other objects that float) can rescue a person in distress;
 Enroll in lifesaving, first aid and CPR training from accredited agencies.

Each class will begin at 9 a.m. with classroom and beach instruction.  The classes are free and open to the public, with reservations requested by phoning 708-903-0166, or RSVP online at
