Governor's Environmental Corps

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) is sponsoring the 28th annual Governor’s Environmental Corps (GEC) summer collegiate internship program. The program is for students with backgrounds in engineering, biological sciences, physical sciences, chemistry, environmental studies, and law who are looking for a meaningful summer internship experience.

Program Summary

The purpose of the GEC program is to promote environmental awareness and education, and provide comprehensive knowledge of issues and careers in the environmental field.

Approximately twenty (20) participants will be selected to work in specific areas of the Illinois EPA such as: the Bureaus of Air, Land, and Water Pollution Control; Public Water Supplies; Laboratories; Legal Counsel; and other supporting program, such as Community Relations and Environmental Education. All positions are located in Springfield.

Internships are full time (Monday - Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) from June 3 - July 31, 2019.  Salary is $1,876 per month.

Eligibility to Apply

Applicants must have completed their sophomore year of college prior to the start of the summer internship program and must be currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program.  Students who previously participated in the GEC program are not eligible to apply.  Please note:  Students who are not attending an Illinois college or university must have Illinois residency.

The deadline to submit your application, transcript and reference form is March 1, 2019. 

Applicants must: be permanent Illinois residents or attend an Illinois college or university; possess a valid driver's license; and provide transportation to and from work.

Applicants must be able to attend a face-to-face interview in Springfield (late March or early April; specific dates TBD) if selected from the applicant pool.  Interviews will be necessary to make it to the final round of consideration. Interns will start work on Monday, June 3, 2019, and must work the full internship schedule except for the July 4th holiday. Vacations should be scheduled before or after the dates of the internship.
