Illinois EPA's general NPDES Permit (ILG62) for new and replacement surface discharging private sewage disposal systems was reissued on October 14, 2020. The permit authorizes a discharge of pollutants from new and replacement surface discharging private sewage disposal systems to waters of the United States.
Dischargers who are eligible for coverage under the final general permit will be permitted to discharge pollutants from new and replacement surface discharging private sewage disposal systems to waters of the United States in accordance with the terms and conditions of the general permit. The permit sets discharge limits and requires periodic inspection, monitoring and reporting. Anyone not eligible for coverage under the General Permit may apply to the Illinois EPA for an individual NPDES permit.
How do I get coverage under the General Permit?
Complete the Following:
IEPA Form ILG62 Notice of Intent (NOI),
A written determination that concludes that an individual or Soil Based Cluster System and all other alternatives to a Surface Discharging System are not technologically or economically feasible,
A soil investigation analysis and a site evaluation report, and
Any other supplemental information as necessary to determine eligibility for permit coverage.

How will I know if I am covered under the general permit?
Illinois EPA will send a coverage letter to you and the applicable county health department. If the coverage under this permit is denied, Illinois EPA will notify you and the applicable county health department of the decision via letter.

mailing paper DMRs to the IEPA unless a waiver has been granted by the Agency.

Was there a public notice for this permit?
Illinois EPA published a draft general permit for public comment on January 16, 2020 and accepted comments on the draft permit through February 18, 2020. Illinois EPA responded to all significant comments received during the public comment period and revised the permit where necessary in response to comments.
