Founded in 2005, the Military Economic Development Committee (formerly known as the Interagency Military Base Support and Economic Development Committee) coordinates the State’s activities on and to act as a communication center for issues relating to current and former military bases in the State of Illinois.

Lt. Governor Sanguinetti serves as chairman of the Military Economic Development Committee and is an advocate for the state’s military bases and their surrounding communities.

The committee’s main responsibilities include:

• To preserve, protect, expand, and attract new military missions, assets, and installations to the State of Illinois;

• To encourage defense-related businesses to expand or relocate to the State of Illinois;

• To identify emerging trends and support the long-term viability of the military and defense industry in Illinois;

• To assist Illinois communities who have been or could be impacted by federal Base Realignment and Closure actions or other military realignments; and,

• To be an information clearinghouse by providing military installation information and recommendations to enhance the military value of Illinois defense installations to the Governor, General Assembly, congressional delegation, and State and federal government officials.

The military and the defense industry directly and indirectly contribute nearly 150,000 jobs and $13.3 billion in economic activity across Illinois, as of 2013. It represents nearly 2 percent of the state’s gross domestic product.

The economic impact is the greatest in the areas surrounding our three active military base installations:

  1. Scott Air Force Base near Belleville
  2. Rock Island Arsenal near Rock Island
  3. Naval Station Great Lakes near North Chicago

These three military bases accounted for almost 85,000 jobs and $9.1 billion in economic activity in Illinois as of 2013.
