Lt. Governor Simon praises Governor for signing law to increase road safety

CARBONDALE – January 27, 2013. Lt. Governor Sheila Simon today issued the following statement regarding Governor Pat Quinn signing a law that will enable every qualified Illinois resident to receive a driver’s license.

“I am pleased Governor Quinn has signed this law, which is a step toward making Illinois roads safer for all who travel on them. As a former prosecutor, I have seen that people get behind the wheel regardless of legal status, and we need to make sure all eligible drivers have the proper training and insurance before they do. I would like to thank the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and Senate President Cullerton and Rep. Acevedo for their leadership on this issue,” Simon said.

Simon joined a bipartisan coalition supporting Senate Bill 957 based on her experience as a Jackson County prosecutor who witnessed the damaging financial impacts of uninsured, unlicensed drivers on Illinois roadways. New licenses are also projected to generate much needed new revenue for the state, she said.
