Sheila to host river meeting today

Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon will host a quarterly meeting of the Mississippi River Coordinating Council today.

Jim Angel, state climatologist for the Illinois State Water Survey, will present a Mississippi River depth forecast and outline the impact the drought in western states has had on Illinois river levels.

The council will also hear an update on the Asian carp migration from James Garvey, director of the Fisheries and Illinois Aquaculture Center at SIU. Garvey released a report identifying the need to manage Asian Carp in order to prevent the species from invading the Great Lakes.

The meeting will take place today at 1:30 p.m. in the State Library, 300 South Second Street, Springfield in room 403/404.
