Assistant Appellate Defender

The Office of the State Appellate Defender has openings for the position of Assistant Appellate Defender in 4th District Office, Springfield. Assistant Appellate Defenders provide criminal appellate representation to indigent clients in the Illinois Appellate Court and Illinois Supreme Court. We are looking for attorneys with exceptional written and oral advocacy skills who bring creativity and passion to the defense of their clients. Criminal defense experience is a plus, but not a necessity. Responsibilities include reading records, conducting research, drafting briefs and other documents, and presenting oral arguments.

Staff Attorney

The Office of the State Appellate Defender has an opening for a Staff Attorney at the Illinois Juvenile Defender Resource Center, located in Springfield, Illinois. The Staff Attorney will provide support and training to public defenders and appointed counsel representing youth in the delinquency and criminal justice systems. This position includes, in collaboration with the Director: a strong focus on designing and presenting continuing legal education programming to juvenile defenders; composing and editing publications, newsletters, and sample legal documents related to juvenile justice; responding to inquiries from juvenile defenders; and maintaining expertise in the area of juvenile law.
