If my parents claimed me as a dependent on their tax return, can I also claim myself on my return?

If someone claimed you as a dependent on their return for tax year ending December 31, 2016, you will enter zero on Line 10a.

For Line 10b:

  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is greater than $2,175, you cannot claim yourself. You will put zero on Line 10b.
  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is less than or equal to $2,175, you can claim yourself.  You will put " 1" on Line 10b.

If someone claimed you as a dependent on their return for tax year ending December 31, 2015, you will enter zero on Line 10a.

For Line 10b:

  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is greater than $2,150, you cannot claim yourself.  You will put zero on Line 10b.
  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is less than or equal to $2,150, you can claim yourself.  You will put " 1" on Line 10b.
