    Frequently Asked Questions

I filed an IL-1040, Illinois Individual Income Tax Return, for a deceased taxpayer but did not include Schedule ICR, Illinois Credits, with property tax information.  Can I file an IL-1040-PTR, Property Tax Rebate Form, for a deceased taxpayer to claim the property tax rebate?

If the property tax information was included on Schedule ICR, Illinois Credits, Section A, Line 4a – 4g, even if the credit (Line 5) resulted in zero due to having no tax, the property tax rebate will be based upon the amount that was entered on Line 4g.  In this case the IL-1040-PTR is not required.

If the deceased taxpayer qualifies for the property tax rebate and the Schedule ICR was not completed and attached to Form IL-1040, file the IL-1040-PTR to claim the property tax rebate.  You have until October 17th to submit Form IL-1040-PTR to claim the rebate.

Note: Only the Property Tax Rebate will be issued by filing the IL-1040-PTR. The individual income tax rebate will only be issued if Form IL-1040 was filed.

Note: The executor or administrator of the deceased taxpayer's estate must sign the IL-1040-PTR with the appropriate title.

I moved to a new residence after I filed my IL-1040.  How do I update my address?

If you need to update your address but have already filed your IL-1040 Individual Income Tax return, you may call our Taxpayer Assistance Division at 1-800-732-8866. To complete the address update, you will need to verify tax information from your account with our representative. Please call with a copy of your previously filed Form IL-1040 or with a notice you recently received.

You can also update your address electronically if you have a MyTax Illinois account for Individual Income Tax.

I have closed out my bank account where my Individual Income Tax refund was direct deposited.  How do I receive my rebate?

If you had your original refund issued as a direct deposit and that account has since been closed, the direct deposit will be rejected by your bank.  Upon being notified of the rejection, the Illinois Comptroller's office will issue a paper check to your current address on file.

My original Individual Income Tax refund was issued on a debit card.  How do I obtain my rebate?

If your original refund was sent via direct deposit and issued to you by your tax preparer on a debit card, and you qualify for but did not receive your rebate via paper check, contact your tax preparer or Third Party to see what steps need to be taken in order for you to obtain your rebate.
