Serving Those Who Served

Serving Those Who Served

Serving Those Who Served is a week of service created to thank service men and women, our veterans, and their families. This November, people all over the state of Illinois will spend the 11/05 – 11/12 engaged in volunteer service projects focused on benefiting our heroes!

You, your family, your friends, your church, civic club, scout troop – you name it! – could be an immense help to a group of men and women who would never ask for help! Whether it's painting, landscaping, assisting with an event, writing thank you letters to the troops, or visiting our heroes in our Veterans' Homes – WE WANT YOUR HELP!

DISCLAIMER: Volunteering to be part of this statewide program may result in a smiling face, a warm heart, an intense sense of pride knowing that you took part in serving those who served our great nation!

Here are opportunities to Volunteer

Pick the one you would like to assist and contact the Organizer that is listed with the project.
Thank you for Serving Those Who Served

2x4's For Hope
Tiny homes for veterans
We break the volunteers into teams with each team having a lead carpenter. These lead people, for the most part, have volunteered in this same program on a previous tiny home build. They will teach other volunteers, including veterans, skills to build this tiny home under the direction of Mark Lawrence, the founder of 2x4's For Hope.

Helping Veteran Nancy Stiles
Veteran Stiles faces a multitude of problems with the construction of her home.
The road leading down a small hill adjacent to her home allows the water to flow off to the side and come down the asphalt driveway into her garage. She has attempted to stop the water from flowing into her garage by placing sandbags and plastic strips on the driveway and entrance to her garage. She felt the building shake when there was a car entering the garage and had an Engineering firm come to her home to test the ground underneath her asphalt drive and garage floor. Some void or other discrepancy under the asphalt and floor was discovered. After reviewing the Engineer's report, an Architect advised she not park vehicles on the asphalt or garage floor. Thus, the initial volunteers should include an Engineer, Architect and Lawyer who might review the problem in detail and make recommendations on how to proceed. Those recommendations will probably result in the need for a construction company or the original builders of the project to correct the structural problems identified.

Farm-2-Table Class - Friendship Apple Butter
The volunteers will be needed for about 1 hour (but need to arrive 15 minutes prior). They will be assisting with our Farm-2-Table class of approximately 15-18 1st graders from our local elementary school. They will help students core, cut and prepare apples then add ingredients to make Friendship Apple Butter. In addition to conversation, they will be asked to taste-test some homemade apple & pumpkin butters along with some store-bought apple butter, all on some homemade bread. They will discuss the ingredients of each, how they might taste differently, etc. There will be two 20 minute sessions in which the veterans can share their story and hopefully make a new friend.
